COMMENTS FOR PROGRAM
The program is based on 'romantic' idiom. Moonlight sonata is one of
most romantic creations by Beethoven, dedicated to 17-year-old
Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. Set of Chopin's music includes well
known masterpieces. British premiere of sonata by Chulovskiy following
by famous Rachmaninov's Prelude: this pieces are united by effect of
peal. The closing set is compiled from pieces by F.Liszt specially for
remarkable event – celebrating of 200 years from the birth of Liszt.
COMMENTS FOR PIANO SONATA BY ANDREY CHULOVSKIY
Piano sonata No 1 by Andrey Chulovskiy has been composed in 2006 in
Birmingham (The UK) for the centenaty from the birth of Professor
Nathan Perelman (pupil of L.Nickolaev and H.Neuhaus) who was the main
teacher of A.Chulovskiy at St Petersburg conservatoire. Old venerable
and highly experienced legendary Professor gave also post-graduate
lessons to Andrey and Andrey often visited him in Saulkrasti near Riga
where Perelman wrote his prominent book of aphorisms (the book was
published in English: N.Perelman. Autumn leaves, Washington,
G.A.Frager, 1994).
A world premiere of the sonata took place in 2006 in Grotegast (The
Netherlands). This sonata was published at the same year in Birmingham
(A.Chulovskiy, Piano works, ISMN 979-0900212702); the score is
available now at Amazon UK as well as in British Library (London),
National Library of Wales (Aberystwyth) etc.
1st movement of sonata begins with a peal sound of short introduction
(Grave patetico) following by Allegro agitato. 2d movement (Andante
con moto) has element of kind humor which was the typical feature of
Perelman's personality (see his book of aphorisms). 3d movement
(memorial music) is based on the Chulovskiy's own tune used previously
by composer in his organ piece Via Dolorosa (organ cycle Music
Tableaux according to the Gospel). Final movement (quasi Toccata) is
like unwinded spring; such type of music leads to final culmination
and one could hear sound of bells again in the last measures like
'bridge' between the beginning and the end.
